Artist's StatementThe Soloist was created in November of 2009 as a private commission. The commissioner’s stipulations were simple: abstract in nature, colorful and containing a piano. Given free range of creativity, the artist thus created The Soloist. The bold colors and their movement around the piano embody the music that arises from the piano. At the piano’s helm is the musician who is so engrossed by what he is doing that he is completely unaware of the beautiful girl that sits next to him. The Soloist celebrates music, beauty and creativity; however, it is also critical of the painting’s hero. No talent or skill should replace the love and affection we can share with warm, feeling and loving humans. The beautiful girl deeply admires the musician, but he ignores her. Therefore, he remains alone. The Soloist mourns the separation that exists between the man and the woman, but at the same time, the colors embrace something very positive: the woman does not want to change the man; she does not want to impose upon him; she simply wants him to look up and show appreciation for what is right in front of him.
