Artist's StatementThe Escape was created in September of 2009. The painting is set in a forest at night. A girl in a red dress hides behind a tree, grasping a dagger, and aware of what approaches upon a hill. The hill in the background is lit with flashlights and dark figures- a search party. The lankiness of the black figures reveals that this search party does not have the girl’s best interest in mind, but she is prepared; she is no damsel in distress. We do not know the outcome of her plight, and we are not sure from what she is running. Danger looms, and she is still in the process of her escape. We do know that she does not want to be found; she does not want to be “rescued,” and she will not be overcome without a fight.
The scene of this painting came to the artist in a dream, and the artist was so moved by the distress felt during the dream that she had to put it to canvas. |
