Artist's Statement

Quiet Now was created in September of 2007.  The apparent red hand prints and the black sludge marks indicate that Quiet Now is packed with emotion.  In the center, at the top, of the painting is an impression of a female’s face- a nose, a mouth, and a cheekbone.  In the center of her mouth and to its side begin two strong black sludge marks that run the length of the painting.  The center sludge mark is central to the painting’s name.  It is an abstract of a finger raised to the female’s mouth indicating a request for silence, or rather a command to be “Quiet Now.”  The black sludge marks do not belong to the female.  They belong to a second party that requests that the female be silent, imposing his command as black imprints upon her, attempting to taint her, and mixing his obscurity with the lipstick that runs down and away from her mouth.  The red hands are hers, full of anger, and positioned in a defensive and an offensive posture simultaneously.

Quiet Now is the artist’s response to the infidelity of a “boy” that she loved in a past romantic relationship.  Instead of owning to his guilt and repenting, he simply tried to silence the artist and trivialize his disloyalty, attempting to make her believe that she could not trust her instincts.  Quiet Now delivers her pain, rage and strength.
