Artist's StatementBreak Mirrors was created in July of 2009. Set in winter, the painting’s heroine rests her hand upon an ornate colonnade. Behind her can be seen a path of destruction. Under the snow lie shards of broken mirrors. On the ground lies her weapon. Even the chain links that once formed an aesthetic barrier connecting small red pillars have been broken. One of the pillars has also been severed- beheaded, as it were. She has clearly been busy decimating symbols of confinement. She is fed up! Her frustration is two-fold. She hates looking in mirrors because she does not like what she sees, but neither does she give in to the notion that she must aspire to someone else’s definition of beauty or perfection. The irony overwhelms her, and so she revolts by destroying the objects of her frustration. We know she completes her task fervently and vigorously, since mascara is clearly running down her face, but her posture in the painting reveals she is now gathering her breath and composure.
